RHYE / Modular lead
The Rhye range of leads and handles are designed to be modular so that the handle can be detached from the lead piece, this allows you to mix and match colors to your Canem collars. The modular design also lets you change to different length leads, or even attach more than one lead to a handle.
The handle is made with furniture grade Norwegian wool from Gudbrandsdalen. The leather lead piece is made from Swedish “överfettet” vegetable tanned leather that has been completely immersed in vegetable fat, making it exceptionally resistant to the elements and incredibly hardwearing. This leather will not get stiff and dry in the cold or after a rainy day.
As with all Canem Studio products the RHYE range of leads and handles are made to order in our Norwegian workshop.
Lead size is a real personal preference, however we do have some pointers:
Width: The RHYE lead is 1cm wide and suits dogs up to 15kg.
100 cm : Perfect for keeping your pup close to you (for example in the heavily trafficked city)
140 cm : The perfect middle ground and a good "go to" length for dogs of all sizes.
180 cm : A little more lead to play with and a bit more sniffing freedom for your pup.
(We usually recommend shorter leads for bigger breeds and longer leads for the smaller breeds for the simple reason that a smaller dog will naturally be closer to the ground and further away from your hand.)
Made of natural materials with a proven record of social and environmental responsibility
Manufacturing: Hand made in Norway.
Handle: 70% Norwegian virgin wool / 30% Viscose. Made in Norway at Gudbrandsdalens Ullvarefabrikk.
Leather: 100% “överfettet” vegetable tanned leather from Swedish lifestock.
Hardware: Solid brass. Made in Germany
The most important thing you can do to support our sustainability mission is to take care of your products with love.
Good leather dog gear is like a good pair of jeans, when new it might appear stiff and unyielding, but it will soon start to shape itself around your dogs habits and adopt the shape of its anatomy.
Vegetable tanned leather ━
Leather is a material that loves to get used! When properly taken care of it ages gracefully and will last you a lifetime.
Clean with a damp cotton cloth and leave to dry. When dry, apply a thin layer of leather fat with a soft shoe brush, a soft cotton cloth, or even directly with your hands. We recommend using a neutral colour, natural leather grease without silicones. A natural, chemical free leather grease will agree with your dog’s coat too.
When cleaning, use a chemical-free leather suitable soap. After washing or after a wet and rainy day out, it's a good idea to let your leather goods dry at room temperature. If the leather is dried in high temperatures, for example on a warm bathroom floor or radiator, it might retract and get dry and stiff.
We use only vegetable-tanned leather for all the products that will be in contact with your dog’s skin and fur. Vegetable tanned basically means that the leather has been dyed with natural products like oak, spruce bark, quebracho, olive leaves, and mimosa bark. By using vegetable-tanned leather, we eliminate the risk of allergies that can be caused by chrome tanned leather. The vegetable-tanned leather will age more naturally than chrome tanned and this will result in a more individual look over time.
Although we try to ensure that the materials we use aren’t susceptible to colour rub, it’s possible that some colour transfer may occur when the leather brushes against pale or abrasive clothing or coats. This is the result of disturbing the wax on the surface of the leather, rather than a permanent dye stain, and is usually easily removable in a normal wash.
Wool and Viscose mix ━
Mother nature took care of this one for you. Wool is self-cleaning and has a great natural ability to prevent bad odours. For a quick and easy clean you can simply hang your woollen stuff in damp shower air or out in a fresh natural breeze and your dog’s smelly adventures will be gone overnight.
To keep the padding neat, stains and dirt should be removed with a damp cloth as soon as possible.
If you are feeling the need for a more thorough cleaning, the harness can be hand washed with water and a wool suitable detergent. After a thorough wash, please remember to use a rich amount of balm on the leather to keep it from retracting.
The wool and viscose mix from Gudbrandsdalens Ullvarefabrikk is highly durable. The fabric is made for furniture and has a durability Martindale score of 100.000. In comparison a score of 30.000 or more means that a fabric is commercial grade, it can be used on heavy duty furniture and would be suitable for any commercial environment.
Brass is a metal that is completely free of nickel. We use solid brass hardware in our products to eliminate the risk of nickel allergies. It is also a beautiful material that ages with grace.
Because the hardware we use is solid cast, there will never be any unwanted change in colour. Brass however can get dull over time, to get it all nice and shiny again you can simply use brass polish and wipe with a damp cloth.
